Charles Amirkhanian introduces the young American pianist Richard Bunger who has written a book entitled The Well Prepared Piano and has just released a fine album of new music for prepared and unprepared piano on Avant (AV 1008). Bunger plays music of John Cage, Henry Cowell, Harold Budd, and E. T. Paull live in the studio, and we hear other pieces from recordings, including The Perilous Night by John Cage, Prelude No. 4 for Piano and Tape by Morton Subotnick, and Chorale for Quarter Tone Piano by Charles Ives. Bunger gives a very complete demonstration on how to prepare the piano for a performance of A Valentine Out of Season by John Cage, and then performs the entire piece.
